What is a Humminbird Sonar?

The Humminbird Sonar is a  special hydroacoustics unit that can be found in many of Humminbird Fishfinder's equipment. You can purchase the Humminbird Sonars alone or as part of a more complex rig that gives you multiple readings at once.

Sonar stands for “Sound Navigation And Ranging”, and has been used by sea men and fishermen alike to navigate and to detect objects in the water that are usually not visible on the surface. Sonar units use sound propagation to map out the sea or lake floor as well as to detect movement. The Sonar emits sound waves which are then bounced back to the unit to be converted into readable data.

Sonar equipment is much more useful than camera technology when searching for fish underwater for it can penetrate the water even in conditions of zero visibility. This is great if you enjoy fishing at night or if you are fishing in dark and muddy waters.

Humminbird Sonar Features

Depending on the type of Humminbird Sonar you purchase, there are several features that you can rely on during your fishing trips. There are about seven different types of sonar equipment that you can choose from:

  • Side imaging – Side imaging gives you a clear, picture-like images of fish and other debris in the water. It covers 480 feet from side to side and gives you a full scan of your surroundings in mere minutes.
  • Down imaging – Down imaging is similar to side imaging but allows you to see directly below your boat. It emits high frequency sound waves to create snap shots of the objects underwater. It can be combined with side imaging for a complete structural view underwater.
  • SwitchFire – The SwitchFire Humminbird Sonar gives you complete underwater coverage, allowing you to see even the tiniest objects as well as thermoclines and water currents in a clean, simple display while on its Max mode. The SwitchFire Humminbird Sonar is especially suited for rough water conditions thanks to its special Clear mode.
  • Single Beam – The Single Beam Humminbird Sonar is one of the simplest available. Its units are small, compact, and gives you precise images.
  • DualBeam – The Dual Beam has a wider scope than the single beam. The first beam collects information in a detailed manner, while the second beam scans a wider area but with less detail.
  • DualBeam Plus – The Dual Beam Plus sonar is roughly the same as the regular Dual Beam but features a special display where you can view both beams separately, side by side, or together. It provides a 60º coverage below your boat.
  • Quadrabeam Plus– The Quadrabeam Plus takes the dual beams even further, allowing you to have a full 90º coverage, scanning below your boat in a fan like shape.
